Learning has never been easier, nor so enjoyable. The entire Encyclopedia Britannica is now in digital format, allowing for easy searches. Video games such as Math Blasters allow children to explore fantastic worlds based on numbers and equations. High school students can electronically practice for the SATs, while aspiring lawyers can find sample LSAT questions. Software programs now teach children math, science, grammar, spelling, typing, and foreign languages. Counting games, alphabet blocks, and activity books have long been staples of "fun learning," and these have most recently been supplemented by educational technology. If the child enjoys the typing games, typing time can be extended.Īs with any other skill, progression will be seen with more practice.Parents, teachers, and other educators have continuously sought ways to instruct children in a fun and interactive way. A child should have dedicated typing time for maybe 10 or 15 minutes a day. I believe a little practice every day will lead to success. Once the child is comfortable, the typing program will begin by teaching the child about home row on the keyboard. Whichever typing program you choose should guide your child in the proper placement of the fingers on the keyboard. Your child should sit up straight with both feet on the floor. The best way for kids to learn to type is to be set up at a computer that is on a table or desk at their height. Typing Instructor is designed for kids as young as six, but I prefer to use it with children ages eight and up. You can purchase Typing Instructor as a CD-Rom or as a download. My kids really enjoyed how interactive it is as they get to explore Typer Island. There are other paid programs you can use to help your kids practice keyboard typing. There are no videos explaining how the hands should be held, but there are written instructions and visualizations. It’s interesting in that it teaches what it calls “Dance Mat Typing.” Basically, kids just learn to touch type properly and must master different levels. Kidz Type offers free typing lessons for beginners. This program does not teach touch typing, but encourages children to learn where letters are on the keyboard. ![]() ![]() I like ABCYA Keyboard Zoo for younger kids. Some parents feel the program is a bit laggy, but overall, it helps children with where to position their fingers. Children progress through different levels, but will need to master a certain words per minute rating before moving on to the next level. Typing Club is a free program that teaches kids how to touch type. You do have a few free options when you begin teaching your child how to type. You want to make sure you child has decent fine motor skills, so I don’t suggest trying to properly teach your child to type before they have a decent grasp on handwriting. That is the ideal time to add a typing program to your homeschool curriculum. In today’s technology driven world, I start teaching my children how to type properly in the third to fourth grade. Typing for Kids Just because we homeschool doesn’t mean we shouldn’t make sure we teach our kids how to type.
